Why are you being given anti convulsants for bipolar disorder. Anti-convulsants are to stop epileptic seizures and 'convultions' hence the name.
Anyway, the shit hit the fan, all you can do now is try to talk to her about it. Don't get angry don't throw a fit or anything else that would prove to her that you need the medication. I'm not 100% positive but you do have the right to refuse medication even at 15 or 16.

You have the right to refuse medicine at any age.
Aliyana, it's because sometimes people have what's called "Frontal Lobe Epilepsy," which is similar to the more common kind of epilepsy that appears in phsyical seizures. The difference is that the result of FL epilepsy is emotional. It helps explain the "mood swings" and extreme, sudden changes of emotions that occur for a person with Bipolor Disorder. Drugs used in the treatment of epilepsy have been found to be very helpful in treating Frontal Lobe epilepsy as well.

Then all you need to do is assert your right to refuse medication and leave it at that. They're going to have to listen to you when you refuse to swallow thier pills, and prove legal basis for it.

Okay let me put it to you this way. Let's say John Doe is a serial rapist and murderer. Let's say that, when he went to trial for his crimes, his defense was "innocent by reason of insanity." Say he was schizophrenic for example. There are medicines that will help him control his violent impulses. But he doesn't want to take them. Even in such an extreme case, no one can force him to take those medications.
Now, would it be beneficial for him to take them? Of course. But he doesn't have to. I can't say whether your medicines are beneficial or not; I don't know your case and I'm not a doctor, even if I did know your case. What I can say is this: You have the legal right to refuse medication, from birth till death. Age is no factor in that matter.

Misanthropist, you have a good point. If your meds aren't helping, don't take them.

you should tell them or right them a note or something that tells them you don't have to take the pills and tell them that nothing horrible has happened since you quit taking them in February. good luck! :b:

Its not like they can hold you down and shove them into your mouth, and if something like that does happen then you need to contact the authorities.
Just flat out refuse to take the medicine. There is literally nothing they can do about it.

Yea, try talking with your mom about it. Tell her calmly, and maturely what the medicine is doing to you, and how you do much better without it. Be polite, considerate, but firm. If she still doesn't get it, tell her flat out you aren't taking the pills. Then don't. She isn't going to force them down your throat. Stand up to her.

throw the pills in a public trash can downtown or at school. All she can do is buy more. Then throw those away too. ;) Keep at it. We're with you. :)

I haven't taken my asthma medicine, for half a year, and my mom likes to try to put a stethescope to me (shes a nurse) and she can never find any asthma problems, of course she doesn't know I stopped taking my meds...
all ways think, If you don't need a drug, why take it? all it'll do is mess around with your body and you're brain, and being an atheist who thinks your "soul" is just a part of your brain, letting meds mess with your brain is a really bad idea to me
is the being able to refuse meds thing true about stuff like blood tests and shots too? cus I remember some times when I was little and didn't want those and they were forced on me

misanthropist: Is that true about being able to refuse medication? I always thought you can be forced to take stuff if you're a minor and/or considered mentally ill. ...or be required to be in a mental health facility unless you agree to take it, anyway?

Eviljinx, if this were the America of our Founding Fathers, you would have the right to refuse taking psychiatric medications. Unfortunately, you are now living in a therapeutic state and over 30 U.S. states have mandatory outpatient psychiatric drug laws. This means that if a judge so orders, thugs (so called "mental health workers") can come to your house and watch you take youir meds. If you refuse, you can be involuntarily committed to a prison (euphemistically called a "hospital" by the psychiatric establishment.) Peter Breggin, a psychiatrist, has written a book on how to safely stop taking your psychiatric medications. You can read about the book and order a copy on Breggin's website:
http://www.breggin.com/prbbooks.html
Some other good antipsychiatry websites are: www.antipsychiatry.org, www.mindfreedom.org, www.schaler.net. By refusing to take these medications, you are resisting one of the worst forms of tyranny in contemporary society. I categorically respect and support you and will help you in any way I can if you need it. I recommend that you contact Support Coalition International (www.mindfreedom.org) and become involved in your local SCI chapter or start one if it doesn't already exist. Your mind is your own. Nobody has the right to force you to take medications because they disagree with the way you think. Mental illness is thought crime and psychiatry is Big Brother.

Aye. I prefer psychology, and I believe that psychiatry should only be used as a last resort, and always in conjunction with non-medical therapies.

Yep. Psychiatry is very risky if not practiced properly...Psychiatry basically fucked up my life for an entire year, along with some other bad things...

I'd suggest that you seek the advise of other doctors. Bi Polar disorder is frequently misdiagnosed. Maybe you have panic attacks - if you were bipolar you would have symtoms daily and the proper drug is Lithium I believe. Do your own research on this and the disease. The psychological industry is so subjective - it isn't based on true science. It's all based on symptoms. You really need to see another Doctor and don't let anyone dope you up with medication you don't need......

When you were taking the medication did you gain any weight while you were on them? I know Depakote causes weight gain. If so I would use that as another reason to refuse to take them. Obesity can lead to things like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, etc. Though I am sure you already knew that.
I know that in some states you can get jarvised.

I've taken Trileptal before. It works under careful medical supervision and is A LOT safer than Lithium for Bipolar Disorder. You should see a doctor regularly to keep an eye out for hepatic side effects (which affect the liver). I've also been on heavier stuff, and I found that Trileptal worked for me until it started messing with my liver (which took 3 years).
If there's any doubt in your mind that you might suffer from Bipolar, you should remain med compliant. You should talk to your doctor about changing your meds, and describe your symptoms in detail to him/her. That is the best way to reduce your episodes to ZERO.
I couldn't tell I was having episodes at all when I was last off my meds. I recommend you stay med compliant until a doctor clears you to come SLOWLY off your meds.
