Here's the plan! I want to get the youtube to remove the 18+ requirement for viewing videos.

To do this I need your help!

To participate you must follow these strict instructions in order to ensure success!! :yup:

1. Make account that makes you under 18 (if you aren't already)
2. Attempt to watch 18+ videos and see what happens
3. Post on google forum's youtube help sections asking something like this:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=314e3455967ce970&hl=en
DO NOT say the exact same thing!!!
4. Write coherently and gracefully but ACT LIKE YOU'RE UNDER 18 (if you're over 18 that is).
5. Reply to thread linked offering advice and what not, someone already has ^_^ (we need to contact him!)
6. Wait for further instructions after that, there WILL be more.

GO GO GO GO!! :D

We could go to all that trouble, or we could all just make accounts that say were 18.

That defeats the entire purpose of anything. It's like "oh well I can't buy alcohol because I'm not 21 yet... then let me just make a fake ID"

It changes nothing and puts you at risk because you have to lie to get a right older people have and by lying and doing the thing you DON'T have a right to do you've just committed 2 crimes.

4. Write coherently and gracefully but include the odd mispelling to make it seem real (if you're over 18 that is) as society thinks those under 18 are too stupid2use the internet.

I disagree with that bit. That's just bowing down to what society THINKS of under-18s. I know of plenty of under-18s who can spell perfectly well. Besides, poor spelling/grammar makes people not want to read what one has written. Every time I see spelling mistakes or someone who has written "your" when it should be "you're", I lose some respect for whoever has written it.

I reckon it's best to break the negative stereotypes, linking youth and poor spelling, by expressing ourselves using correct English, not by bowing down and conforming to those stereotypes.

I didn't mean it like that. It just needs to be believable that someone under 18 wrote that, we can't give ourselves away or the plan might fail :\

I understand what you meant, but I still think we shouldn't make fake spelling errors because then it's like we're dumbing ourselves down. We want society to think more highly of under-18s so making incorrect spelling mistakes on purpose is probably not going to help our cause.

I do understand what you meant though...

Google can't do that, you need to understand. It's all in the law books. It's illegal to let under 18 year olds to watch porn. see the are you 18 buttons on porn sites. Work to Change the law.

This is true what he says. YouTube is not allowed to take down that 18+ requirement.

I'm not wasting my time doing this. There are far more important YR issues out there that we should be paying attention to.

Oh yeah? Great! What have you been up to? :)

Precisely! If we don't do anything at all "because of the law" NOTHING WILL EVER GET DONE.

Really, I don't see this being a productive idea. Like has been said, they have to have the 18+ requirement, especially because there's violence and soft pornography on YT. They have to do it to cover their ass so some parent doesn't sue them because Johnny saw video X, Y, or Z. They are not going to take it down; I'm sure they would prefer to have many disgruntled young viewers complain rather than lose millions in lawsuits from protective parents.

Also, including spelling errors in e-mails will just make youth look stupid, and just reinforces society's prejudices.

It was illegal for bus drivers to let blacks sit at the front.

Is it not illegal to let youth see violent realities.

Well, go ahead and do this, but recognize it as being more of a rallying or awareness raising thing rather than intended to actually get the policy overturned.

The worst thing we could do is sit around and do nothing. Like Plessy Vs. Ferguson, it was law but it was by no means accepted and was eventually overruled by Brown Vs. Board of Education.

And I thought this was a civil rights organization?

Let's face it, Lindsay. We need to take the small battles first, like more lawsuits against curfews, which I'd do myself if I could retain a lawyer. Cities are easier to beat than corporations.

You guys act like this is instead of other stuff. Stop making excuses for ageists. There are no small battles.

I'm not weighing size, I'm weighing probability. If we wanted to take a serious shot at YouTube, we'd have to use up more than twenty times the time and resources already used by every other youth rights cause combined. It's not feasible until we can get a greater foothold into the common mind and therefore, more support.

Youtube puts up those "18 to view" things because if they didn't, they'd get sued by parents who don't feel the same way Youth Rights people do, and get into huge trouble over Billy viewing softcore Youtube porn. It's not Youtube's fault. And you can't compare someone getting a fake ID to say they're 21 for getting alcohol, to changing your date of birth from 1996 to 1986 on a website registration. One is punishable by law, the other, no one cares about. Lying about your age to view pornography or people swearing isn't a crime and is done EVERY DAY regardless of the "ageist rules." That's why the internet is great.

And seriously? Act like we're dumb and can't spell correctly to prove that we're not over 18? :shame:

Heres the problem, it's not YouTube thats bad, it's Shitgle (Google). ALL of Google's services are ageist, look at Orkut, they don't even allow porn on it and its still restricted to those over 18 and of course AdSense and AdWords. The only Google service thats not ageist is the good old Google search. Bing and Live search are ageist, Google search is not.
